Your Pathway to Recovery

What Are The Symptoms of a Hernia?

Symptoms of hernias include a noticeable bulge, pain or discomfort during physical activities, a feeling of heaviness, or in severe cases, gastrointestinal symptoms. It’s crucial to seek medical advice if these symptoms are present, as hernias can lead to more serious complications.

What Causes a Hernia?

Hernias can be caused by a combination of muscle weakness, often present at birth, and pressure within the abdomen. This pressure can stem from lifting heavy objects, diarrhea or constipation, or persistent coughing or sneezing.

How Are Hernias Diagnosed?

Hernias are primarily diagnosed through physical examinations, where the presence of a bulge may be noted. For internal hernias or to plan for surgery, imaging tests like an abdominal ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI might be used to gather detailed information about the hernia’s size and location.

Do I need to repair my hernia?

Some hernias may be small and cause little problem and may be left alone.  Hernias which cause pain or discomfort or are enlarging usually need to be surgically repaired.  The objective of repair is to cover or close the hole, whilst reinforcing any weak muscle and disturbing the surrounding area as little as possible.   This is usually accomplished by the use of minimally invasive techniques with the use of mesh.

Hernia surgery, if carried out before the hernia gets too large, can often be accomplished as a day case procedure, and it is essential to have the operation done correctly the first time, to avoid the risk of hernia recurring as it gets harder to repair.

As a busy professional with personal experience of healthcare in US, UK and Europe, I can highly recommend Ms. Chang for providing excellent surgical treatment and outcome, with total rapid recovery and nearly invisible scarring.  She was thorough in her assessment and initial consultation and listened carefully to my pre-operative concerns.  Her full knowledge of her specialty and her clear, easy to understand explanations inspired confidence as a patient.  The operation for my double hernia was a complete success and I am entirely satisfied with the results!
