What Are The Symptoms of Gallstone and Gallbladder Surgery Conditions?

Symptoms that could indicate the need for gallstone or gallbladder surgery include abdominal pain (particularly in the right upper or middle upper abdomen), fever, jaundice, and nausea or vomiting. These symptoms often flare up after meals, especially those high in fat.

What Causes Gallstones and Gallbladder Problems?

Gallstones are primarily caused by high levels of cholesterol or bilirubin in the bile, which can form stones. Other risk factors include obesity, diabetes, and certain medications. Gallbladder problems can also arise from inflammation due to gallstones or other issues.

How Is Gallstone and Gallbladder Issues Diagnosed?

The diagnosis for gallbladder-related issues may begin with a review of the patient’s medical history and a physical exam. Imaging tests, such as an abdominal ultrasound or a MRI scan, are often utilised to confirm the presence of gallstones or other gallbladder abnormalities.

Gallbladder Surgery FAQs

The gallbladder is a small pear shaped organ attached to the surface of the liver which stores bile produced by the liver.  When you eat, the gallbladder squeezes out bile into the small intestines to aid digestion as bile helps to break down fats in food.

Gallstones can form from salt crystals in bile, and can range in size from grains of sand to a very large olive.  Gallstones may be present without symptoms, but they can also cause severe pain and other more serious problems for you.

When you have problems from gallstones, the recommended and most effective treatment is an operation to remove the whole  gallbladder with the gallstones inside.   This operation is called a laparoscopic cholecystectomy and is carried out using small incisions or ‘keyhole’ surgery.

The operation is performed under General Anaesthetic, and takes about an hour to do on average.  Many patients can go home the same day or the day after this operation.

Most patients will be advised to take two weeks off work though some may choose to return after one week.  Be aware that the most intense wound healing occurs in the first two weeks and that is why the advice to not work, but to reserve your energy for the body’s healing processes.

If you have been suffering from attacks of pain from your gallbladder, or have other problems from gallstones such as pancreatitis or have had episodes of jaundice, then you need to see a surgeon to see whether you need more investigations and how soon you should have surgery if needed.  Each person’s case is different and you should receive an individualised assessment.

You may have had previous abdominal surgery and have been told you can’t have keyhole surgery.  However, keyhole surgery may indeed be possible in more experienced hands like Ms Chang.

You may have significant medical problems and have been told the surgery is too high risk for you, but it may be possible if there is excellent medical support which is provided by Cleveland Clinic London where Ms. Chang operates.

I was lucky to have Ms Chang as my surgeon for laparoscopic gallbladder removal.  Her quiet, professional yet empathetic manner put my mind at rest at our first consultation.  She took time to listen to my concerns, to answer my questions and to explain the upcoming procedure.  After years of suffering due to my worries about having surgery, my gallstone had grown to entirely fill my gallbladder, but my very large, hard gallbladder was still removed through the very small keyhole openings.  I could have faced much more intrusive surgery had it not been for the wonderful skill of Ms. Chang.  I will be forever grateful to her for the personal and professional care she showed me.
